When it comes to the care and maintenance of your carpeting, every fiber producer or carpet mill stresses the absolute importance of periodic vacuuming.  Most professionals recommend that you vacuum your carpeting at least twice a week.  Yet often, all that we know about our vacuum is how much it costs us and what the salesperson said about it.

Vacuums are like most anthing you buy– you do get what you pay for.  There is a difference in quality, workmanship, and performance.  Technology has changed vacuum cleaners.  Today, a high efficiency collection bag keeps smaller particles from simply being redistributed by the vacuuming process.  An upright vacuum with a beater bar or adjustable brush head seems to work the most efficiently.  Regular vacuuming can effectively remove up to 75% of the soiling that collects in a carpet.  This removal of abrasive soiling extends the carpet’s appearance and life.

It is important to concentrate vacuuming particularly on high traffic areas.  A proper functioning vacuum will allow you to do lower traffic areas less often.

We often make it a point to take a look at our customers’ vacuums.  Many times a poorly performing vacuum is not the fault of the vacuum itself.  Anything that restricts the flow of air through the vacuum reduces its ability to perform.  Keep your vacuum in good condition.  Make it a point to check your belt frequently.  Many homes’ vacuums have belts that have been broken for months.  Check and empty the collection bag often–it may be restricting airflow.

Carpet Cleaning

Carpeting is the most luxurious floor covering you can own.It adds color, style, image, “feel” and acoustic to the indoor environment. It is also designed to hide soiling. That’s right–by the time a carpet looks dirty, it already is very dirty. The law of gravity tells us that whatever is spilled in the indoor environment, it falls to the floor. If carpet is there, it will often hide it. What we’re trying to say is that carpet serves as a sink. It collects and filters things from the indoor environment. Soil, bacteria, allergens, and pollutants fall to the ground and collect in the carpeting.

Does the fact that your carpet is a sink and that it collects and filters things, mean that carpet is bad? Absolutely not. Not when carpeting is properly maintained. Think about other floor covering alternatives–tile or linoleum floors; hardwood floors; concrete floors; or dirt floors. HOW OFTEN WOULD YOU HAVE TO CLEAN THEM TO KEEP THEM FROM GETTING UNSIGHTLY DIRTY? They obviously are still affected by the laws of gravity. You have to sweep and mop them all the time. Proper carpet maintenance is a lot easier. Also, other floor covering alternatives do not filter contaminants from the air. Therefore, these contaminants continue to float throughout the indoor environment. If carpet is a sink, then quite simply, we need to empty out that sink periodically. Regular vacuuming can only remove some of the soiling. That is why carpet mills, fiber producers, government authorities, medical personel and more recognize the absolute necessity of periodic professional cleaning.

Periodic professional cleaning is necessary at least once every twelve to eighteen months, more often if traffic and soiling conditions dictate.
